Turning fractures into raw strength.
Florent Duchesne, a sculptor inspired by the raw universe of punk rock and the vibrant energy of Montreal’s techno rave culture, explores the contrast between apparent lightness and raw materiality, playing with the ambiguity of forms and materials to provoke surprise and reflection. This exploration began following a personal, significant event: the loss of his cat. He then started creating concrete sculptures in its likeness, which he placed throughout cities. While working with concrete, he accidentally discovered the richness of forms this material can produce. The result, both unexpected and organic, inspired him to further develop this technique. Each sculpture takes on its own unique life.
The world of skateboarding, in which he is immersed, teaches him perseverance and acceptance of failure. In this context, he forbids himself no ideas: for him, failure is an essential step in the creative process. Concrete, often perceived as massive and heavy, becomes a medium he seeks to free from its constraints. This gesture resonates with the universe of raves, sometimes seen as illegal and risky spaces associated with marginality and a culture of excess, while in reality, they embody quite the opposite.
